About Neuro Linguistic Programming

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming?
NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. 'Neuro' specifies that we are talking about the mind. 'Linguistic' refers to the science of language. 'Programming' refers to the fact that we are programming the way we use language internally.

Who developed NLP?
NLP was invented by Dr John Grinder, a well known professor of linguistics, together with Richard Bandler. Together they produced a linguistic model that identified the language patterns of a few gifted individuals such as Hypnotherapist Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls of Gestalt therapy, anthropologist Gregory Bateson and Virginia Satir, well known for her work in family systems therapy. The synthesis of their findings, a blend of cognitive and behavioral science, resulted in the technology known as NLP.

How has NLP grown?
In the decades since its initial development, NLP has grown, changed and expanded, and it continues to do so today. It is not a bible of how to do things, more a flexible approach to personal change. Many well known NLP figures have suggested that 'If it works, it's OK'.

How quickly can NLP work?
NLP is often used as a vehicle for 'fast' or accelerated change. One of its underlying assumptions is that without NLP people can change and that over time these changes can be profound. The technology of NLP means that the same changes can happen very quickly, even within minutes!

How does NLP work?
NLP uses 'modelling' and 'strategies' as two of its core tools. Basically, this means looking at how highly successful people or 'models' achieve their success. Which internal strategies do they use? These strategies are then distilled into handy tools that other people can use to achieve similar success.

Simply put: ‘NLP can enable you to understand what makes you tick, how you think, how you feel and how you make sense of everyday life in the world around you. Armed with this understanding, your whole life, work and play can become magical.’ As quoted from NLP for Dummies by Ready & Burton.

Who else uses NLP?
Many people use NLP automatically with out even being aware it and example of these people may be sales people, doctors, nurses, counsellors, other therapists and anyone with a good positive outlook in life.

What is an example of NLP?
Some therapists use NLP to help you get over a problem. For example if you are lacking confidence seeing yourself in a picture which may be bright, moving and in colour then in changing that picture to a dim, still and sepia colour and pushing it far away from you to a postage stamp size.

Then create a new picture of a confident, happy and relaxed you in a moving, big, bright and colourful picture feeling all the positive aspects of the ‘new’ you. Then in switching back to the ‘old’ you it is very difficult to see as the ‘new’ picture replaces the old.
