Article: If anyone is interested in why I keep saying to stop burning candles or switch to beeswax or Soya and I talk about toxins then this article might be of interest to you.
Burning Bright - Beeswax and Soya candles are a safe alternative to harmful paraffin candles.
While rearranging paintings in her home, Cathy Crystal noticed gray smudges on the wall around the frames. Baffled, she discovered similar gray "ghosting" bordering electrical outlets and air vents. "We don't allow smoking in our house and have a stove exhaust, so it didn't make sense," recalls the California nutritionist. A week later, when lighting a constellation of votives on the mantle before an evening soiree, the source of the mystery soot dawned on her.
In 2001 the American Lung Association issued warnings that candles are a common unrecognized cause of poor indoor air quality. The National Association of Home Builders has received increasing reports implicating candles as a major cause of black soot deposition, which damages home interiors, not to mention skin and lungs. These microscopic particles--smaller than 2.5 microns--are recognized by the EPA as responsible for aggravating respiratory illnesses, especially in children.
Candles, per se, are not problematic; rather, the culprits are paraffin, colorants, synthetic scents, and lead wicks. Paraffin is the last product after asphalt in petroleum refining. The gray-black sludge is decoloured with 100 percent strength bleach, creating dioxins, before further processing. The resulting wax contains a host of toxins, including benzene and toluene, both recognized as possible carcinogens by the EPA. Industry regulations do not require candle manufacturers and retailers to disclose hazardous compounds, or to provide a comprehensive ingredient list, even upon consumer request.
"We do know that there are irritants in the burning of paraffin and petrochemicals," explains Chris Molinari, vice president of global communications at the Aveda gift company, which uses only beeswax and essential oils in its candle products. "And from a sustainability perspective, as a brand, we do not use any materials that are not from a renewable source."
The multibillion dollar candle industry has boomed in the last decade. Fragrance intensity boosts sales, and many manufacturers simply dump in more synthetic oils, then claim dubious aromatherapy benefits. "A lot of big companies are jumping on the bandwagon and saying their products are aroma therapeutic, when they're not," says Cheryl Hoard, president of the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy. "They're using synthetic fragrances instead of essential oils."
Though U.S. candle makers voluntarily agreed 25 years ago to prohibit lead-core wicks, some imported candles still contain the toxic metal, the burning of which results in airborne lead particles that can be respired. A study conducted by the University of Michigan, School of Public Health found that burning a candle with a lead-core wick inside a room for an hour can raise to unsafe levels airborne lead particles. (Rub wick tip on paper; if there's a pencil-like mark, toss it.)
But the good news is that candles made from natural wax sources--beeswax, Soya, bayberry, and palm--are benign and burn clean. Beeswax, derived from flowers and bees, is non-toxic, naturally aromatic, and when burned emits beneficial negative ions that actually help purify the air. But beeswax supplies are limited, making it expensive.
Recently a renewable, non-polluting candle wax has entered the market: Soya wax. While researching cost-cutting measures for beeswax candles for the Body Shop, candle maker Michael Richard of Iowa created a viable market for what is considered a surplus commodity. "Currently I use only about 2 million pound of soy oil a year, but I hope the amount will increase as the health hazards of paraffin--about 2 to 3 billion pounds annually used in candles--become more well-known," says Richards, who now trains people to become cottage-industry chandlers. "With about 18 billion pounds of soy oil produced every year, it's possible to replace petroleum wax without planting more soy beans." Thinking about your Diet? I received this by email and thought it funny.
In the beginning God covered the earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, with green, yellow and red vegetables of all kinds so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives. Then using God's bountiful gifts, Satan created Dairy Ice Cream and Magnums. And Satan said "You want hot fudge with that? And Man said "Yes!" And Woman said "I'll have one too with chocolate chips". And lo they gained 10 pounds. And God created the healthy yoghurt that Woman might keep the figure That Man found so fair.
And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat and sugar from the Cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 12 to size 14. So God said "Try my fresh green salad".
And Satan presented Blue Cheese dressing and garlic croutons on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast. God then said "I have sent you healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them".
And Satan brought forth deep fried coconut king prawns, butter-dipped lobster chunks and chicken fried steak, so big it needed its own platter. And Man's cholesterol went through the roof. Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with potassium and good nutrition. Then Satan peeled off the healthy skin and sliced the starchy centre into chips and deep fried them in animal fats adding copious quantities of salt. And Man put on more pounds. God then brought forth running shoes so that his Children might lose those extra pounds.
And Satan came forth with a cable TV with remote control so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering light and started wearing stretch jogging suits. Then God gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite.
And Satan created McDonalds and the 99p double cheeseburger. Then Satan said "You want fries with that?" and Man replied "Yes, And super size 'em". And Satan said "It is good." And Man and Woman went into cardiac arrest. God sighed ......... and created quadruple by-pass surgery. And then … Satan chuckled and created the National Health Service.
I have nothing against the NHS and I think the moral of this little story is that we need to be responsible for our own health and wellbeing.
After an exhaustive review of the research literature, here's the final word on nutrition and health.
- Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
- Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
- Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
- Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
- Germans drink beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
CONCLUSION:
Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you!
A Case Study – Panic Attacks: Jane (name changed) came to see me about her ‘Panic Attacks’. She experienced the first one some years ago and they were gradually getting worse. It had got to the point that Jane’s life was affected nearly every day by what she could do and what she was limited in doing. When I asked Jane said that she felt ‘overwhelmed’ by her life, about 9, 10 being the worst. I always like to get some idea of how bad an issue is and the easiest can be getting a number out of 10. Fine, awful, dreadful or okay does not do it for me. I am psychic but I am not a mind reader!
I worked with Jane looking back to when she experienced her first panic attack and asked what else had been going on around that time. She told me that there had been a death in the family of someone who she had been close to. We started talking about what this death meant to Jane and she burst into tears, very quickly I dealt with the emotions that she was feeling then. Within moments Jane was calmer and said ‘I thought I had dealt with that’.
Next I checked about more frequent panic attacks that Jane had experienced and she said that when she thought of them they did not feel so strong and she felt easier talking about them. She said that she felt as though she had more space around her.
We went backwards and forwards through her life checking for any other negative thoughts, feelings and emotions. All were clear. The session lasted for about an hour and Jane made another appointment to see me again. I warned Jane that she might feel a little tired all she had to do was drink water and have an early night.
Jane rang me the next day saying that she had felt exhausted after our session so she took my advice and went to bed early and said that she had the best night sleep that she could remember, waking up refreshed and somehow excited. This can be normal feeling tired after a session and typically it is only the first session.
Jane came to see me for another two sessions. When I last spoke to her she said she felt great about a 8 out of 10 being the best. She said that friends and work colleagues had noticed a difference in her and kept asking what had happened. Jane was happy at last and able to deal with life’s ups and downs, she was back in control.
News Flash Further to the warning about Ecover now being sold in supermarkets which is scented and can now only be bought in Health Food Shops unscented. Apparently supermarkets do not wish to stock the purer wash powder. So to find your nearest safe stockist: www.ecoverproducts.co.uk or www.ecotopia.co.uk Ecover 08451 302230 for the telephone number of your local health food shop stocking Ecover. www.ecotopia.co.uk will supply you the original Ecover cheaper than the supermarkets although there is a delivery charge.
* Apparently BRITA water filters have withdrawn ALL their round cartridge filters, replacing them with square or rectangular ones which make all round cartridges obsolete. Other companies have been offering cheaper filter contents for round generic universal cartridges at a more reasonable price than BRITA, and now apparently BRITA wants to monopolise the European market with its square cartridge policy. This may make economic sense but not ecological?
Thought for the Month: Alan Bennett ‘Life is rather like a tin of sardines - we're all of us looking for the key.’
Be honest, who might you be? Doctor slang is a dying art: The inventive language created by doctors the world over to insult their patients – or each other – is in danger of becoming extinct. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3159813.stm
More Articles Planned: I will be adding more articles in the future the ones I am planning are ‘Dealing with Depression’ and also an article about dental fillings.
